Welcome to The Brightwell Center for Children,
Teaneck's multicultural child development center where we provide nursery, toddler, preschool and pre-kindergarten services as well as after hour enrichment programs.
The Brightwell Center for Children is an establishment for young children that celebrates the individual personalities and learning styles of all children, through the use of a "back to basics" approach to learning. This system of cognitive stimulation, socialization, and discipline combined is effective in the development of well-adjusted children. The services provided are not limited to traditional day care and early learning programs, but include play groups on Saturday and Sundays for those children not enrolled in the full-time day school.
History
Dr. Attallah Brightwell - a native of Teaneck, opened the doors of Blocks & Bridges Family Day Care in 1991, in a small building in Freehold, New Jersey. Her mission was to offer high quality child care at an affordable rate. After several years of working within this small community with the socially and economically deprived as well as those with developmental delays, she recognized the need for an early educational program that served the needs of various populations of children. She discovered that her background in Business Administration was only beneficial to the administrative aspect of the business and that she was in need of training that focused on early childhood development. This resulted in Dr. Brightwell returning to school and receiving a Master of Arts degree in Developmental Psychology and Multiculturalism, then a Doctorate in Early Educational Psychology. She then expanded her program and changed the name to Blocks & Bridges Child Development Center. Over the next twenty-years, Dr. Brightwell would create a curriculum rooted in structure and discipline. This curriculum coupled with committed teachers and supportive parents would prepare hundreds of young children for their formal educational careers. By 2010, Dr. Brightwell would consider the requests of parents in the community to expand her program to offer additional programs that would be open to those children not enrolled in the day school. She reorganized the program to The Brightwell Center for Children so that it includes services other than traditional daycare and preschool.
Services Offered
Day School
Infant Care (6 weeks - 9 months)
Our philosophical approach to nursery care is based on the premise that the infant mind is absorbent and stimulated by early intellectual exposure through the use of music, story-time, tummy-time and adult interaction.
Toddler I (9 months - 18 months)
The toddler classroom is spacious and filled with play equipment that can be pushed, pulled, and rolled. The children are encouraged to utilize their large muscles to assist in their physical development. Story-time, singing, bubbles and puppet shows are Incorporated to stimulate cognitive development.
Toddler II (18 months - 2.5 months)
When the children move to this classroom, they follow a schedule that is more structured than the first toddler room. They participate in teacher-directed activities that include story-time, object recognition, circle-time, music, puzzles and gross-motor activities.
Preschool (2.5 months - 3.5 months)
Once placed in this classroom the children participate in activities according to ability and behavior rather than age. These children are now exposed to alphabet recognition, name writing, all fine and gross motor activities as well as story time and puppet shows that increase social awareness and manners.
Pre-kindergarten (3.5 years - 5.5 years)
Those participating in the pre-kindergarten class have demonstrated a sense of independence and discipline. The students are required to participate in teacher-directed activities for 2 1/2 hours each day. These activities include but are not limited to the following: name writing, alphabet recognition, geography, addition and subtraction, cutting, sewing, current events and reading preparation. While their is a focus on cognitive development, we understand the importance of appropriate social behavior. Each teacher is trained to guide and assist each student in behaving in a manner that is socially acceptable.
Helping-Hands for Children with Special Needs
